The people seem very nice, and it seems to be a more relaxed environment than my last job.
I couldn’t get into the network today to use the computer - they have to do more paperwork. So I spent most of the day reading government agency standards for documentation. That’s about as interesting as it sounds.
It’s a more open workspace than I had before, and people in the hallway get kind of noisy. That could be a potential problem if I get an assignment where I really have to concentrate on what I’m doing.
But as first days go, it was fairly good. I’m glad to be part of the normal world again. (I do worry that I won’t be able to fake normality forever, and that people will find out how messed up I really am. But I’m trying to be optimistic here.)
What if….I could do Step Three BEFORE my life becomes a total disaster?
Thanks for the update. Day one is usually relaxed. I am SURE that gov't agency paperwork was a REAL page turner - couldn't wait to get to the next paragraph!
As for the potential noise problem, a potential suggestion: noise canceling headphones. All future situations!
As for worrying about "faking normality" - think of it this way. We put our "Hey, ain't my life JUST GRAND!" face on at work. Meanwhile, our lives at home may be terrible (or, maybe our lives at home are great too). Your co-workers are no different than you. They too have things going on in their personal lives which they are dealing with. Sick parents. Sick kids. Angry spouse. Work stress. Financial woes. Dating issues. (or again, everything is fine in their personal lives - they may be miserable at work). When I was on the job I would tell people, "Nobody here knows what XYZ goes home to when he walks out the door."
