It is great that 12-Step programs embrace such a diverse group of faiths. The important thing is to tap into that mysterious energy that causes a shift in consciousness and gives us the willingness to change. No one really understands how this happens and to give credit to one belief system over another is ridiculous. They all work for different people. Different strokes for different folks. Find what works for you. Find what helps you love yourself and make the changes necessary for recovery.

Hi Butterflygirl, I being a non-denominational Christian and following the God of the bible, "I AM", am also not one to condemn anyone else. No where in the bible does it say to put down another man's religion or to even be a 'religion'. The only thing required is the pick up my cross and follow Jesus. Which I struggle with every single day. I have had lots of friends who were buddhist, atheists, anarchists, native-american spiritual, and hari-christna's.... my mom was a hippy and I was exposed to many things and have always had an open mind to others beliefs and cultures.

I am also very tolerant of other people's choice of spiritual paths and have experimented with many myself before finding one that works for me. For me it has been helpful to surrender and immerse myself in one religion and really dig in to its teachings and practice its disciplines. I need the form and structure and rules that my religion gives to me. It has changed my life for the better.
