You know how music can often trigger us in relation to our POA and addiction in general? It alters emotions, and brings back memories and feelings from the past. While in recovery, i've tried to stay away from that kind of music. But it works the other way around too! That's why I will dedicate this thread to music that is empowering, and reminds us of all the things we need to remember in recovery... To alter our emotions in a positive direction. I hope to get a lot of nice tunes in here! I'll start The beatles - Let it be Katie Melua - It's only pain The rolling stones - You can't always get what you want Amy Winehouse - Tears dry on their own Enigma - Return to innocence Dolly Parton - Little sparrow Cher - Strong enough - Life after love Louis Armstrong/Eva Cassidy - What a Wonderful World Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry, Be Happy Katrina & The waves - Walking on Sunshine Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive Sound of music (Jane Andrews) - I have confidence in me Nicole Scherzinger - Don't hold your breath Toby Mac - Get back up Chris Tomlin - Amazing Grace Tank - If you dream Martina Mcbride - This one's for the girls Tina Turner - When the heartache is over Leona Lewis - Better in time Christina Aguilera - Beautiful Tubthumping - I get knocked down Skunk Anansie - Squander - Over the love Maximilian Hecker - Grey Maximilian Hecker - You came to me when I was born I'll come back with some more, please join in! Lots of light.

Great topic! There's another one like this from a couple years ago.
Don't forget to add Sound of Music's "I Have Confidence in Me" It's corny, but wonderful!

Ooo, I love "Don't Worry, Be Happy..." lol, because it should be my mantra. There was one someone posted awhile ago, but I can't remember the name. It was linked to youtube...
I like Chris Tomlin's "Amazing Grace," "If You Dream" (Tank), "Get Up" (Toby Mac), "This One's for the Girls" (Martina McBride)

In the pre-published version of my book, each chapter began with music lyrics . . .most of these are from the fifties (my generation). The one that influenced me the most is "You are nobody til somebody loves you." I took that to mean I was not lovable. Now I love myself and God loves me so "somebody loves me. Self-Worth You're nobody til somebody loves you; you're nobody til somebody cares. Obsession
I am going out of my head over you; out of my head over you. I can't help falling in love with you . . . Call me irresponsible, I'm unreliable, but it undeniably true, I'm irresponsibly mad for you. . . (Frank Sinatra) Now I have found my perfect love . . . (Doris Day) The Hungry Heart Some say love it is a hunger, an endless aching need. (Bette Midler) I will always love you . . . (Whitney Houston) Looking for love in all the wrong places, looking for love in all the wrong faces. . . (Johnny Lee) When we walk hand in hand, the world becomes a wonderland--it's magic. . . (Eartha Kitt) Love at First Sight First time ever I saw your face. I thought the sun rose in your eyes. . . (Roberta Flack) Fantasizing
Whenever I want you all I have to do is dream, dream, dream... I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine, anytime night or day. Only trouble is, gee whiz, I'm dreaming my life away. . . (Everly Brothers) High Tolerance for Suffering Do me wrong or do me right, tell me lies but hold me tight--just don't let me be lonely tonight. . . (Isaac Brothers) Don't it make my brown eyes blue. Tell me no secrets, tell me some lies. Give me no reasons, give me alibis. Tell me you love me, but don't say goodbye. . . (Crystal Gayle) It's a heartache, nothing but a heartache. Love him til your arms break and then he lets you down. . . (Bonnie Tyler) Tell me he's lazy, tell me he's slow. Tell me I'm crazy, maybe I know. Can't help loving dat man of mine. He can come home as late as can be. Home without him ain't no home to me. Can't help loving dat man of mine. . . (Showboat) Controlling I'm just a woman in love and I'll do anything to get you into my world and hold you within. I may stumble and fall, but I give it my all. . . (Barbra Steisand) Caretaking As long as he needs me, I know where I must be. I'll cling on steadfastly as long as he needs me. As long as life is long, I'll love him right or wrong, and somehow I'll be strong as long as he needs me. If you are lonely then you will know. When someone needs you, you love him so. I can't betray his trust, though people say I must. I've got to stay true--just as long as he needs me. . .(Dionne Warwick) Dying for Love Fish gotta swim and birds gotta fly. I gotta love one man till I die. Can't help loving dat man of mine. (Showboat) I need you so, that I could die. I need you so, that I could cry. (Everly Brothers) * * *
These lyrics never made the published edition because I could not afford to pay the copyright fee. They wanted up to a hundred dollars for each line of each song. I was so depressed when I had to find "free usage" quotes to take the lyrics place. Still my favorite part of my book are the chapter heading quotes. My favorite . . . "Poets have no right to portray love as blind. We must remove its blindfold so we can see . . ."

Beautiful post Butterflygirl! I've listened to a lot of those songs back when I was sick. I'll take the liberty to post a text I wrote for my sister a little while ago. It hasn't been recorded yet, but we hope to do it soon. Tell me what you think I ought to know about illusion Cause i've been struck by it ever since you made your intrusion And you look at me silently Smile in the dimmed light And you come on so vionetly Oh darling it sure feels right This story starts tonight and looks just like a re-run But this time i'll let it go before there's any harm done What's the odds of anything but sh*t At two in the morning And i'll be so ashamed of it So this is not a warning Get away before the sunrise, there's no use in saying please Cause if you sweep me off my feet i'll walk away on my knees They say, hope and love goes hand in hand The reason I flee I don't think you'll understand But love is just a hamsterwheel to me We could fight the time, use every line, and sing like love-sick cripples But a womans heart, to me, is just as useful as a mans nipples So what do you hope to get Except for another blow It haven't begun yet But the signs are beginning to show In an hour, when you kiss me sparks will turn to bursting flames when the sunlight hits my window we'll pretend we don't play silly games But that's just another lie the addicts tell themselves I no longer wonder why I've put that book back in the shelf And if I cave, i'll say, if you're gonna do it please just do it right Your eyes shines brightly and I know you got them set on me tonight But I won't recognize the glow I'll just let it be And I don't think you'll ever know But love is just a hamsterwheel to me

Thank you Sillypuppet, i'm glad that my writing is of value to someone else than myself. It isn't excately healthy, but the feelings I get during my recovery is also important and should be honered in some sense... I think Butterflygirls comment on how love is always portrayed as blind and above everything else is absolutely true. It shouldn't be like that, because in reality, it isn't. And I loooove "When the heartache is over"! Thanks, i've added that to my personal playlist. Light to everyone.

I think this song is magnificant! I'll just post the text here, as it is a great reminder when close to acting out/giving in to addiction...
Skunk Anansie - Squander
Why take everything you see? You'll have nothing left to squander If you keep pushing me away You'll have no one left to love You throw it all away Those ties you went and suffered for you cause disaster and flounder flounder flounder flounder Why take everything you see? You'll have nothing left to squander If you keep pushing me away You'll have no one left to love You're less than you should be what runs so hard to finish I you cause contentment and I wonder wonder wonder wonder Why take everything you see? You'll have nothing left to squander If you keep pushing me away You'll have no one left to looooove looooove Why squander squander squander squander Why take everything you see? You'll have nothing left to squander If you keep pushing me away You'll have no one left to love

Funny that the article mentioned Smokey Robinson's "You Really Got A Hold On Me". I am reminded of his appearance on "Sesame Street" where he performed the song. The Letter U was the subject of his song who was obsessed and just wouldn't let go! Fun to see great songwriters poke fun at the melodramatic lyrics in their songs. Link below: I am starting to visualize that Letter U every time I hear the word "You" in a song. Makes listening to potentially triggering songs more humorous and less serious

Music can be a huge trigger. I used to use it all the time to manipulate my mood, or to remember someone and "long" for them. But if you're serious about recovery, you have to stop taking yourself and the music so seriously. And some of us may have to even give it up. At least for a little while.
When I say that, people get anxious. "What?! Give up music? I can't do that." But the truth is, you're not giving up anything more than the SAD songs. If you really consider yourself a music lover, nows the perfect time to learn a new genre of music--one that doesn't remind you of him or her. Bluegrass, polka, rock, folk, psychedelic, middle eastern, asian….there are so many different styles out there! Claiming that you need to hold on to the sad songs or the ones that bring back memories is another attempt to hang on. Let it go!

I´ve joined a gospel choir in an attempt to distract myself and aid my recovery. It helps me tremendously, it really lifts my mood and takes me out of myself and my obsessions!
When we sang last sunday the preacher mentioned something about some music that is nurturing and other that is not, it made so much sense. I had to think of all those sad love songs that make me wallow in despair. On the other hand, there are the songs to the HP or some classical music, those fill you with hope. The preacher even likened singing uplifting songs to working out or eating chocolate. So there´s no need to give up music altogether, only choose carefully what you will listen to.

Is Forever Enough? ---Dixie Chicks
"How long do you want to be loved? Is Forever Enough....cause I'm never ever giving you up..."
"Ghost" by Indigo Girls
"When Love Take Over You" by Donna Summer.
"It don't just happen to you it happens to everyone....I understand what you're going thru...it's nothing new cause I've been there too...you can't keep up with your change of mood....when love takes over you..."

Music has been a problem for me too. I only liked the sad love songs that made me long for different POA's. I took it one step further and searched out songs to match up to certain POA's, that way each POA and I had "our song". This is something I never even thought I could change until recently. I will look into more uplifting songs.
From Susan . . . Songs of love and yearning should be sung to your Higher Power. "I walk in the garden alone . . . and the love we share as we tarry there none other has ever known.

I'm so glad this topic came up. One song that I really identify with is Joy Division's "Isolation." Not only does it sound great, but it also really explains my limerent condition as well as the plight of other love addicts. This song should be on the soundtrack of my life. It's basically how I often experience what I mistake for "love" and continual rejection from the few people I'm actually highly attracted to. I was going to make a threat on it because it's so accurate. Other people say it's about artistic angst but the minute I heard it, I immediately identified with it.
"In fear every day, every evening, He calls her aloud from above, Carefully watched for a reason, Painstaking devotion and love, Surrendered to self preservation, From others who care for themselves. A blindness that touches perfection, But hurts just like anything else.
Isolation, isolation, isolation.
Mother, I tried, please believe me - I'm doing the best that I can. I'm ashamed of the things I've been put through, I'm ashamed of the person I am.
Isolation, isolation, isolation.
But if you could just see the beauty, These things I could never describe, These pleasures, a wayward distraction, This is my one lucky prize.
Isolation, isolation, isolation, isolation, isolation.

When I was finding for songs to empower me and to stop the fantasy of being rescued, chanced upon this song. It is not my kind of bubblegum pop but the lyrics were just meaningful. The song is Cinderella a remake by Tata Young.
My favourite part of the lyrics:
I can slay my own dragon I can dream my own dreams My knight in shining armour is me So I am going to set me free

Great topic! Music is a HUGE trigger for me. I finally took my ipod and shoved it in a drawer for awhile. So many songs on there bring up memories. I went out and bought some CDs of artists I had never heard before and started diving into new kinds of music. I've found that really helpful for me. Music has always had a huge place in my life and I couldn't stop listening to it, but many of my longtime favorites I just can't listen to anymore... at least right now.

I got a pocket, got a pocketful of sunshine I got a love and I know that it's all mine, oh, oh oh oh Wish that you could but you ain't gonna own me Do anything you can to control me, oh, oh no Take me away, a secret place A sweet escape, take me away Take me away, to better days Take me away, a hiding place There's a place that I go that nobody knows Where the rivers flow and I call it home And there's no more lies in the darkness there's light And nobody cries, there's only butterflies Take me away, a secret place A sweet escape, take me away Take me away to better days Take me away, a hiding place Take me away, a secret place A sweet escape, take me away Take me away to better days Take me away, a hiding place Take me away (I got a pocket, got a pocketful of sunshine) A secret place (I got a love and I know that it's all mine) To better days take me away Take me away (I got a pocket, got a pocketful of sunshine) A secret place (I got a love and I know that it's all mine) Take me away, a hiding place The sun is on my side and takes me for a ride I smile up to the sky, I know I'll be alright The sun is on my side and takes me for a ride I smile up to the sky, I know I'll be alright
Natasha Bedingfield - Pocket Full Of Sunshine
always an uplifting song to hear, secret place is my higher power's safe place (nature) away from addiction and triggers ::-))))

I am from Japan but a big fan of American pops and rock music, also British ones. Beside the addiction issue, this forum made me write something. In fact, I didn’t understand any lyrics of the songs but I started to listen to The Beatles when I was 10 or so. My elder brother, who became schizo later on, was a big fan of English pops and it affected me a lot. Music comforted and empowerd me a lot and I couldn’t live without it especially when I was depressed because of my brother’s mental sickness. My parents had to take care of him while I was in deep sadness. I loved The Beatles, CCR, Three Dog Night, Albert Hammond, Elton John, Ventures, Chicago, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney after the Beatles, Paul Mauliat, Fransis Ray, Simon & Garfunkle, Carly Simon, Bad Finger, Grand Funk Railroad and so on. I cannot write all here.
