From Susan . . . I just watched this. Thanks for posting it. Excellent understanding of the relationship between the ego and super ego, to use Freud's terms. After a magnificent explanation of the two parts of our brains, I wish she had given us more information about how to travel from one brain hemisphere to another. She implies, after her stroke, that we can do it all at will. For me, when I experienced nirvana [spiritual awakening] it just happened. I was just sitting there when it happened. It is bliss like she says. Its residue remains with me to this day as my faith and comfort when stressed. But I did not to make it happen. It felt more like a gift because it just happened. The only thing I did was to prepare. I was reading about spirituality. I was praying because I did not know how to meditate. I was, at the suggestion of the AA literature, remaining open-minded. I just know it changed my life. Perhaps the analogy of the garden explains this mystical experience. We till the soil, we plant the seeds, we water and pull out weeds [shortcomings]. God does the rest. I used the steps to create and maintain my garden.
From one of our members . . . I came across this really interesting video on spirituality and thought it would be nice to share with others. This is Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor's story about her "Stroke of Insight". She's a Harvard anatomist who had a stroke on the left side of her brain, which inadvertently "woke up" the right side of her brain and she had a beautiful Nirvana-like experience. Her story is pretty fascinating and it really helped me to understand that a more beautiful way of looking at the world is possible.
