I saw this quote a few months back and I always repeat it to myself when I feel I am getting too clingy with a significant other.
My mother was incredibly clingy towards her own children due to all the neglect she faced from her own mother growing up. As a result, the only love I ever learned how to give was desperate clingy possessive love. It is hard to let go of the need to possess someone, because when you find someone great, you don't want to have to ever life live without them...but I realize that by holding on so tightly to someone, I am more likely to make them run away.
I am trying to live and love in appreciation rather than ownership. Regardless of how our consumerist society says we need to own everything, including our partner. Regardless of how many love songs and romantic comedies talk about "getting" the girl/guy and a person finally being "mine."
I always thought that if someone loved you back, you wouldn't mind being possessed by them. I don't know if that is true or not, but I am not going to risk it.
