Why you are a Porn Addict and How to Overcome It
All addictions are factored in your body and mind. They all began because you felt a certain way at the time you started drinking, smoking, doing drugs, porn etc. - for some reason you liked the high /feeling and so continued indulging yourself for a long time to the extent that you couldn't do without the vice anymore. Maybe you just wanted to try out something new, or you started out of curiosity, or peer pressure but now you are hooked and can’t get out.Relax! In this article, we are going to be talking about why you are a porn addict and how you can overcome it. Let’s go there
One thing you should know about porn addiction is that it thrives and lives like any other addiction. Let me use myself as an example of my dealings with pornography addiction.
My struggle with porn addiction started as plain curiosity. A friend of mine forgot a porn mag to my place and I ended up flipping through all 45 pages of naked girls for hours. The next day, I was in the adult section of the shopping mall with the need to see more exposing pictures. That’s how my addiction to porn grew and almost became unsatisfiable. Over the next few years, I went from porn mags to movies, explicit pictures and internet pornography. And my cravings drove me to weirder shades of porn. To the point that I could not let go, I couldn’t do without porn, I couldn’t live a day with two or three shots of pornography. Until I totally got tired of being tired of porn and got rid of it some years ago. Do you know what I did? I got pornography OUT of my system and am going to show how to overcome it as well.
As a porn addict, you are a slave to it, you are controlled by it and your body and mind wants/needs/yearns/craves for pornography. Therefore you will have to get rid of everything that has to do with porn around you. Throw out and burn every movie and magazine you have with you. Delete all downloaded porn video files you have on your computers, phones and devices. Also make sure you empty the recycle bin so that you do not go back when tempted.
Get to the root of why you are using pornography in the first place. Just like any other drug, pornography is a drug too. People watch porn to self-medicate. They are usually in pain and so they use porn to numb or feel something else other than pain. So take some time to figure out what you are escaping from, what you are hurting from. If you cannot do it yourself, a good counselor will help you find yourself.
The following tips will help you overcome porn addiction:
Get a new “positive addiction”. Try a sport that is completely physical. That involves a lot of activity and coordination like lawn tennis, martial arts, basketball, etc.
Learn a completely new skill that will preoccupy all your free time.
Learn a musical instrument.
Make new friends and socialize often.
Talk to someone about your addiction.
Do not ever be alone with your thoughts until you can handle it.
Commit yourself not to hear no porn and see no porn for at least 30 days.
Stay away from places that can trigger your urges.
Pray about it.
