It’s coming back, and there are some reasons why I’m not surprised.
1 - The U.S. political situation. We get a new POTUS today, but extremists haven’t gone away.
2 - I just got an email from my brother. Our dad is not doing well. They both live a long way away from me. My brother says he is trying to get my dad a walker, get him into assisted living, and help him put his house on the market.
3 - At my current job, they want me to do an “Activities Based Costing” survey. In my experience of corporations, this sounds like they’re preparing to lay people off.
4 - I did have an interview for a job I think would be good for me, on January 8. It was a pretty intense interview - the whole thing took about 2.5 hours, included an editing test, and involved five people. But I haven’t heard back yet.
You’ll notice I didn’t mention anxiety about my love life, about L, or about my fear of abandonment. That’s because anxiety about those things is always there, low-level, waiting to kick up to a higher level.
I’m afraid my anxiety about these things will kick the love/abandonment anxiety up higher.

Rose Nadler:
There are many folks I correspond with who are where you are with respect to your father. Make no mistake, these are fearful times for the elderly and their families. Are you able to help your brother with what needs to be done? Does he want your help? It's one of those times in life when reality must be faced. Your dad is also fearful - he's losing his home and his bodily automony. That's HUGE.
If your toxicCorp company is doing the survey, get your resume polished up. I agree with you - read that CorpSpeak for what it is.
I half wonder about these companies that are "hiring". It's like they waste your time when they have already had a candidate lined up. Did you contact them and ask your status?
Remember what you can control and what you can't. Whether new toxicCorp hires you or you stay at current toxicCorp, you still have a paycheck. Nobody is coming to take your house away - with you in it.
The US extremists haven't gone away, but neither have folks who don't think like they do. You can't let the fascists win by fearing them.
Step back, live in the now and when it comes to the "Activities Based Costing" (WTF is that title? So CORPSPEAK) do the task and see what happens. One moment at a time.

One wonderful thing about the deal with my dad - my brother lives near our father, and my brother is one of the most trustworthy, reliable people I know. We disagree on a lot of things, but I absolutely trust him to help our dad as best he can.
In fact, I feel rather superfluous. I think they could get along fine without me. That hurts a little. There’s some childhood stuff to unpack here. I did ask my brother, “What can I do to help?” and he said, “Call Dad, keep in touch with him.” So, I’ll do that.
On the jobs thing - if my present toxicCorp does lay me off, I know better than to take it too personally. Corporations have a way of discarding employees like a used c o n d o m as soon as they think they can’t use us anymore. (Yes, I’m very jaded about corporations, employers, and the business world in general.) If this happens, I will go to the Glassdoor website and leave a truthful anonymous review: “Very good pay, decent people to work with. But hires contractors whom they can easily dump as soon as the stock market hiccups. Don’t count on [toxicCorp] for any career stability.”
And, regarding the possible new job: one week after the interview, their HR person emailed me, and wanted to keep me informed - they would probably have an answer by Tuesday or Wednesday. Today is Thursday, and I haven’t heard anything.
But you are right - it’s not the end of the world if I don’t get this job. Disappointing, but not the end of the world. I’m lucky - I will not be out on the street if the job situation gets a little rocky for a short while. (More than a year, and I’d be in trouble.) If I don’t hear by tomorrow morning, I will email the HR person.

Rose Nadler:
Let me share something with you. I am working as a P/T home health care aid right now. I am seeing family dynamics play out in other families. One lady I help out is the mother of 6 children. One or two help out. That's why they pay somebody like myself to help their mother with daily living activities. Your dad is blessed that your brother is a stand up person and is taking control of the situation.
If your brother said, "Call dad", do it. If that's ONLY help he wants (right now) that would mean the WORLD to your dad. Often the elderly feel abandoned - and they are. The can no longer fully participate in life. Can't go out for a drive. Go to a restaurant. Go shopping. Go hang out at a friend's house. Frequent contact from you would help him so much.
If your brother needs your help in the future, he will ask for it. Trust me. He will.
I share in your jaded opinion of ToxicCorps and toxicCorps. Seen it before many, many times. I highly recommend Glassdoor and Indeed reviews. That's my mode. However, leave the comment a month or two after you leave (if you leave - no OMD quote). Have you read their existing reviews? Those are always a good read.
Oh yeah. The "We'll get back to you on X day". I applied to one position and got interviewed two different times. "I really want to bring you on board! I have to talk to HR! We'll contact you by next week." A month goes by. I get THE SAME email stating the SAME THING later in the month. "We've hired somebody internally". GTFO with that.
It's Friday - did you hear back? Did you email the HR person?
If not, whatev's. You've kept up your interview skills and for the moment - you are still employed with or without the "Activities Based Costing" (SMH at that term).

Are you okay today? Did you complete toxicTOXICCorp's "Activities Based Costing" make work project?

I found out I didn’t get the job. It’s a disappointment, but I think I’m almost finished processing it. It really ISN’T the end of the world.
At my present job, I’m supposed to receive the link to the Activity-Based Costing (b u l l s h i t) survey tomorrow (Monday.) On Thursday, they sent me some links to videos about the survey and all their excruciating details on how they want to sort and record everything.
Normally, I can get on board with systems, structures, taxonomies, timelines, org charts, etc. But this system is so convoluted, it made me think of Alexander the Great solving the Gordian knot by just slicing through it with his sword.
Once I’m safely retired, maybe I’ll write a book about the fact that the U.S. corporate workplace is almost 100% b u l l s h i t, denial, and illusions.

Rose Nadler:
That's okay you didn't get the job. I half wonder if they had a "pre selected" candidate they wanted who got hired. Whatever. It was more "experience" for you. And maybe that position would have been worse than the worst position you ever had.
I am hoping things go your way with the ACTIVITY BASED COSTING survey today. Sound like another make work project that they spent too much money on with the consulting company. I believe you when you describe your feelings about US Corporate work. There are a few Reddit subs for that.

Once your turn your will and life over to the care of God, (third step), God speeds up your recovery. He immediately locks certain doors so you will look for the doors he left open for you. I learned this when I did not get a job and the next day a better job was offered to me. Go with God's wonderful flow down the river of life.

Thank you guys for answering me. The truth is, I really wish I could just retire right now and never have to deal with it again. But (if things go as I hope) I don’t get to retire for another 10 years.
So, since I have to work anyway, I was kind of pumped about the idea of the new job, because it would have been less computer/IT stuff, and more writing and editing. But it was not to be. My present gig isn’t bad, and life could be a lot worse.

Yeah - grab an oar. I'm in the same "Want to Retire NOW" boat as you.
As long as you're still WORKING you're okay.
And perhaps if you HAD gotten the job, it may have turned into TOXICtoxicCorp sooner than later.
