Breaking up is hard to do, as is widely noted. I try to avoid all love songs during withdrawal. But there are some popular songs that definitely lift my spirits and help me move forward with a breakup when it's called for. Maybe there are some songs that lift your spirits too and help you move forward.
Some are more appropriate for women intent on breaking free from a man
Some are more appropriate for men trying to break free from a woman. Gay people can add their favorites too.
Please feel free to add your favorites:
I have one of mine on auto-play right now: It's from the straight male perspective. Ladies please add your favorites.
Don't Shed a Tear by Paul Carrack "Cab fare to nowhere, is what you are.... Locked door on a candy store, is what you are.... All that I saw in you, now I see through.... Don't shed a tear for me My life won't end without you! Don't shed a tear for me The sun will rise without you!"
A note to non-native speakers of English. I would be happy to help you understand the lyrics of this or other songs here. I understand that it is extremely difficult to understand a song's lyrics, slang, colloquialisms, etc.

I'm really not qualified, but here's one from the female perspective, I'm sure there are better ones out there, but this could be a start.
Cruising for a Bruising by Basia
"How can I tell you why For so long
So long So long I've been thinking Now I know I can't live a lie Can't live a lie"
Jennifer Warnes, I know a Heartache When I see One

When not in love, love songs should be sung to your Higher Power. In the Garden
I come to the garden alone While the dew is still on the roses And the voice I hear, falling on my ear The son of God discloses
And he walks with me And he talks with me And he tells me I am his own And the joy we share as we tarry there None other has ever known
I'd stay in the garden with him Though the night around me is falling But he bids me go Through the voice of woe His voice to me is calling
And he walks with me And he talks with me And he tells me I am his own And the joy we share as we tarry there None other has ever known
And the joy we share as we tarry there None other has ever known

Painful love songs can compulsively fill my head and drag me down. Singing "It's Too Late Baby" by Carole King to myself on repeat is a powerful antidote.
… Stayed in bed all mornin' just to pass the time There's somethin' wrong here, there can be no denyin' One of us is changin', or maybe we've just stopped tryin' … And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it Somethin' inside has died And I can't hide and I just can't fake it Oh, no, no, no, no, no (No, no, no, no)
… It used to be so easy, livin' here with you You were light and breezy, and I knew just what to do Now you look so unhappy and I feel like a fool … And it's too late, baby, now it's too late Though we really did try to make it (we can't make it) Somethin' inside has died And I can't hide and I just can't fake it Oh, no, no
… There'll be good times again for me and you But we just can't stay together, don't you feel it, too? Still I'm glad for what we had and how I once loved you … But it's too late, baby, now it's too late Though we really did try to make it (we can't make it) Somethin' inside has died And I can't hide and I just can't fake it Oh, no, no, no, no
… It's too late, baby It's too late now, darling It's too late

I always loved this song in the past but the lyrics take on new meaning now, thank you. It brings this one to mind, but not sure if it's encouraging, or otherwise: The First Cut Is The Deepest, and I've always liked the PP Arnold version best.

I’m so old, I remember the Rod Stewart version. So do I lol. That was actually after PP Arnold. I did check who wrote it, and it was Cat Stevens. That was a good version, too.

PP wins her version is so sixties with that HUGE wall of sound production style. Why haven't we heard this before? Where has it been hiding?

It was very popular in the UK in my youth lol. You prompted me to look this up and there are some interesting facts here, quite relevant for us love addicts.
