Certain kinds of addictions lead people to make career choices that are reflections of their disease, because addicts often try to use their careers as a defense against their addiction. Hiding behind the role of "expert" can be a way of defending oneself against deep pain and dark secrets. How can one possibly have a problem in the area where one is the expert?
Relationship addicts most typically are drawn to careers in the helping professions. Many of us who choose the professions that involve helping others do so because we are damaged ourselves. We then use our work as a way of focusing on other people's lives and problems in order to avoid the facing our own.
We have the most to offer others when we have our own recovery in hand.
