I cannot stress enough the importance of knowing how the following things can affect/effect your MOOD:
PMS
Ovulation
Post-MS
Alcohol
Caffeine
Sugar
Sleepiness/Sleeplessness
When you find yourself in a crying mess or an emotional wreck like I have been for the past two days , please remember to ASSESS the past 3-5 days prior to your mood. Did you drink alcohol? Did you increase or decrease your caffeine intake? Are you getting your period? Could you be ovulating? And so on. I can't tell you how wacky my emotions can be if there is any combination of these things at play! I'll wake up all happy, and then suddenly, as if the wind just shifted, I'll find myself crying over sad songs, thinking miserable thoughts and feeling horrible about almost everything.
Not only that, but I will begin to BLAME these emotions on others. "I'm sad because my kids made me sad..." or I feel low because my bf hasn't called yet," etc. Whatever the case may be, we tend to forget that emotions are CHEMICAL; tiny little chemical reactions within us that can lead us to believe one thing when another is at play.
For example, if two days ago I went out and had a margarita for dinner, had two cups of coffee instead of my normal one cup, and then went to bed late (I know it sounds ridiculous), but like clockwork I can almost guarantee I'll be an emotional mess.
I've been feeling so sad lately, and I couldn't figure out why. I am blowing EVERYTHING out of proportion. Suddenly, I realized, it's period time! ANd that calmed me down immensely.
When you are in early recovery (not when you are still dealing with a PoA- because in that case, the PoA or your inability to remove yourself from his or her life, can be causing the emotional trauma), remember to go easy on yourself and ask yourself if one of the above can be responsible for your shift in mood. Knowing that these things effect my mood has truly changed my life and made me A LOT calmer.
Oh yes, and not having to deal with some crazy, pot-smokin' neglectful hippy has helped a lot too You get my point.
