I wasnt sure where to put this post as the message boards are so big and fairly confusing. Since codependents are women who love too much I will put it here.
I just finished the book. It was the single most helpful book I have ever read. And I have read many self help books. But this one hit home and was just what I needed.
She wrote stories of women who love too much that she encountered in her counseling practice. At first it was hard to read these stories because I saw myself in many of the women. Having done the same things they did and put up with the same poor treatment they did. But I forced myself to read on and learn.
She explained the origins of codependency and how our families formed us into being this way. That part was hard to read too because I have been hiding from my past for about 28 years. I left home at 19. Joined the navy and was stationed far away from home. I literally fled from my problems and hid from them. But little did I know it was those problems that were causing more problems in my life and had made me who I am today.
I lived with 2 alcoholic parents like many of the examples in her book so I know first hand what its like to be around that and how the defense strategies work for kids in that situation.
She had an example of many types of women who love too much and the many ways they ended up being who they are. But she also includes their stories and how they healed and dealt with their issues.
Then the last half of the book is about healing. She has 10 steps listed in healing. I will work these steps too. She explains each step. And she tells the story of one womans healing journey. Its good to hear the healing part. Gives us hope. Also included are tons of resources and other books on healing.
I cant recommend this book enough. I cant wait to read it again. This book really spoke to me and I wish I had read it 30 years ago.
