Some parents provide the welcome gifts of love, security understanding, and support, while other parents offer far less welcome and comforting qualities and conditions. Yet these, too are gifts.
Perhaps in your family of origin...
A cold different mother forced you to abandon clinging dependence and stand on your own two feet or...
A critical and disapproving father caused you, in striving for his approval, to take on challenges you wouldn't otherwise have attempted, until one day you realized what incredible things you've accomplishe, or.... a subtly cruel mother or father sensitized you to how easily a word, look, or gesture could wound, and now you are more consciously compassionate in your daily life than you otherwise would have been.
While you may wish yours had been a more ideal childhood, you need to acknowledge that less than perfect parents and conditions quite possibly provided the necessary pressure for whatever maturity, growth and understanding you can claim today.
