I think this thread really belongs under 'Sense of Self' in the Introductions section. But it needs it's own heading, so I'm putting it here.
I have just stumbled across this, mainly by reading about it in books and on the web. I used to wear all the wrong colours for me, dark and murky ones instead of clear and bright. Then I discovered the right ones for me - orange, lime green and yellow. When I wear these I feel good, like in harmony with my inner self, the real me.
Now when I hold up clothing in colours like black, purple or pink that don't suit me in front of a mirror, I put them straight back on the rack. No matter how much they might appeal to me visually, if they make me look 'down' instead of 'up', 'dull' instead of 'radiant', they are not right for me.
Orange has been my colour of choice for the last couple of years. It started off with spectacle frames, then spread to my hair (just highlights, not the whole lot!), then to articles of clothing.
I have a very good book about the power of colour, and what it says about 'orange people' is true of me. It says that people attracted to the colour orange often have unresolved traumas.
Colour is something definitely worth studying when trying to build a strong sense of self.
The colours we wear say a lot to others about who we are. Some people in the very conservative, middle class area where I live freak out when they see me coming. It used to upset me, but I just laugh now.
A couple of years ago I went to a hippy town about 10 hours drive north called Bellingen and had the opposite reaction. It was like as soon as the people there saw me they knew I was one of them, and vice versa. That was a very validating experience for me. I was OK after all.
