The unconscious mind is that part of your brain where you store everything you are not aware of. Things you are aware of go in your conscious mind.
The unconscious is referred to as a dark place because you do not know what is there. Your past is there. Your basic instincts are there. Your sinful nature is there [shadow]. Your creativity is there waiting to be explored. Your love of God is there ready to be born.
Therapy is an attempt to figure out what is going on in your particular mind. How does it work? With the help of your guide you talk and analyze any slips of the tongue you might have. You analyze your dreams. You write and see what comes up in your mind. To retain what you discover in therapy I suggest you keep notes. After each session write in your journal.
Transference can reveal what is going on in the unconscious. Transference usually means the feelings a client has for his or her therapist. A broader interpretation includes anyone you transfer feelings too from your unconscious. Analyzing these feelings brings the unconscious into the light.
To understand transference, it is also important to understand projection. Projection can be understood if you imagine that in your unconscious there is a projector. At any given moment it can turn on and on the screen of your conscious mind you can see what is going on in your unconscious.
Why should we explore the unconscious? Because there is as much good in there as there is bad. It was during my exploration of my unconscious that I found God. My unconscious awareness of God suddenly came into the light of my consciousness and I could feel the joy which is the first gift of the Holy Spirit.
Furthermore, if you are being held back because of unconscious memories of the past delving into the unconscious can free you. You process what happened and then you move on. Without knowledge of what happened to you and how you felt about it, all you know is depression, anxiety and PTSD. Details of what happened, buried in the unconscious, is the first step to letting go of the tyranny of the past.
