Denial Denial is very much a part of addictions, but I want to point out that it starts as a coping mechanism--a survival tool. When we are very young, we are in denial because we cannot bear the pain of our reality. Later, we are in denial to be safe. Then we are in denial so we don't murder our parents or kill ourselves. Eventually, the denial becomes a habit and full blown addiction. In recovery, we come out of denial slowly. This is important. Small steps will keep our inner child from having a panic attack. The truth is not always pleasant. Sometimes, I wish I had my denial back. LOL Attachments:
