Remember . . .
Withdrawal takes time.
Why? Let me tell you a story. In the book I'm OK. You're OK, Richard Harris describe a conversation between a brain surgeon and a patient. While operating, the doctor probes the patient's brain. He asks the patient what he is experiencing. The patient says, "I am 5 years old again." The doctor says, "Oh, you are remembering your childhood?" The patient says, "No I am back in time. I am 5 years old." The doctor had just discovered age regression.
Love addicts experience age regression during withdrawal. Emotionally, we go back in time and are once again in survival mode trying to get through some traumatic experience. This is why we sometimes do odd things when we are in withdrawal.
If you get better each day during withdrawal, you are on the right path. But some of us get stuck and can't move on. That is what happened to one of my sponsees who killed herself.
I believe that this is such a serious issue that with some of us support groups and therapy are not enough. We need a divine intervention. This is when we cry out, "God help me." If we are ready, God comes to us and saves our lives.
If you are in trouble, open your mind and search diligently for your Higher Power. Ask for the "knowledge of God's will for you and the power to carry that out."
I am one of the lucky ones. I found God and he is with me now when I need him. I wish this for all my fellow travelers.
