Remember . . . Self-Pity is a negative thing in the recovery world, but self-soothing is a good thing. How do you know the difference?Self-pity is when you fall into despair and feel as if God has forsaken you. Self-soothing is when you pay attention to your pain and soothe yourself with positive affirmations about your ability to survive and remember that God is with you every moment. Self-pity is when you turn your back on God. Self-soothing is when you reach out to God for comfort. Self-pity is when you do something self-destructive to distract yourself from your pain. Self-soothing is when you hang in there and reach out for what is good in your life. Self-pity is when you hurt others out of anger at your personal situation. Self-soothing is when you acknowledge your anger, but do not act on it. You do not harm yourself or others. Self-pity is when you give up. Self-soothing is when you take on a positive attitude and look for a brighter tomorrow. Self-pity is when you refuse to accept life on life's terms. Self-soothing is to practice acceptance. Self-pity will hold you back and self-soothing will carry your forward to something better.

Good advice, I can tell that you are a caring, compassionate individual but...I personally will not allow myself to harbor feelings of pity or despair. These will weaken me. I prefer to fight and seek justice. I realize that cannot work for everybody. Justice is a great thing. It feels good, but the feeling does not last because it is not the ultimate solution. Acceptance, and eventual forgiveness, is the only thing that works for me and many others.

I’ve needed to see this….pretty much all my life. I’ve had some bad periods of self-pity.

Self-pity is a poor substitute for self-esteem. We often pity ourselves because we do not feel worthy of love. When you realize how much God loves you then you can begin to love yourself. Then "self-pity will slip away." A.A.
