Love One Another Today, I went to feed the homeless in Berkeley and met a woman named Samantha. She was different from the other homeless. I came to realize that the homeless fall into three categories. One is the mentally ill drug addicts who use their money on drugs instead of paying the rent. The others are the mentally ill people who have no money and are unable to navigate the bureaucracy. And then there are the responsible people who have some money and simply cannot pay the outrageous rent increases of the last year. In getting to know Samantha, and her five-year-old child Serenity, I noticed that she did not like to ask for help and was now feeling hopeless. Still, she and her daughter were just coming back from the laundromat so I could see they still care about things like hygiene. I asked her if she needed help and she burst into tears. She said she did not know where to go for help. I explained that I had no money and no car, but I had a computer and could find some city programs that could help her, which I did. There but for the grace go I.
