A short story within the novel, the Silver Skates has become well known in its own right in popular culture. The story is about a Dutch boy who saves his country by putting his finger in a wall holding back water. The boy stays there all night, in spite of the cold, until the villagers find him and repair the gay woman.
In other words . . . if we try to fix a broken relationship, we need help. We can only do it by ourselves if we have the help of the whole village. If the villagers had not come along, the boy would have died with his finger in the gay woman.
