The Sacraments
Susan Peabody
Sacraments are rituals that help us get closer to God. In Christian faiths the number of sacraments is open for debate. The Quakers (Society of Friends) have no sacraments. They believe they are a distraction from prayer and meditation which is how they communicate with God. Most Protestants believe in two sacraments: communion and baptism. Roman Catholics have seven sacraments. When I turned from spirituality to religion in 1983 I did not believe in sacraments. I was a Quaker. In 1995 I only believed in communion and baptism because I was a Seventh Day Adventist. As a Catholic I have accepted not only the seven sacraments, but the fact that are more than a symbol. The mass is supernatural. It actually turns wine and bread into the body and blood of Christ. Here is a complete list of the sacraments I believe in: Baptism Eucharist (communion) Confirmation Reconciliation (forgiveness) Anointing of the sick Marriage Holy orders (ordination) Vows Penance Confession Acts of charity Sacrifice
