Shirley
Susan Peabody
After Frank died, I started to pray for more adventures. I know God wants me to be happy. A year later, I met Shirley. At first, I was her mentor, but soon we were great friends. Shirley lived in Scotland and I fantasized about meeting her one day. To my surprise, she felt the same way. Six months later she announced that she was coming to America to see me. I was astonished even though I had prayed for this. Shirley arrived in July and put me up in the hotel where she was staying. It was on my beloved UC Berkeley campus where I had gone to school and worked as a secretary for 25 years. It was a dream come true. A few days later we went to San Francisco and saw all the wonderful sites. I have lived across the bay from S.F. and never found the time to see all the places I had heard about. It was just amazing to see them with Shirley. We stayed at Fisherman’s Wharf, went to Starbucks everyday, and ate fabulous meals at famous restaurants. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. For fourteen days we went on one adventure after another including a trip to Muir Woods where Shirley pushed me around in a wheelchair for three hours. On our final day, we went down to the wharf to see the fireworks. This was a treat for Shirley as they do not celebrate July 4 in Scotland. Eventually Shirley had to go home. We hugged and cried. Then she went back to Scotland. You might say all this was a gift from Shirley, but I believe God had a hand in this.
