In conclusion, I want to reiterate that change is a natural process that we must not interrupt by clinging to our familiar routine. We must remove any stumbling blocks by little acts of will under the guidance of some intuitive force within us that knows what is best. We must root out our bad habits and try new things.
To keep our spirits up, we can keep track of our progress by writing a journal and reading it every few years. In 12-step programs members are asked to tell their life story every now and then. In the process, it is easy to see how much you have changed. You can also tell your story to your therapist or a trusted friend and make note of how different you are today compared to how you were when you started your journey.
It is also important to celebrate the changes you have made. Addicts pick up chips at 12-step programs. Others can set aside one day a year to celebrate the milestones of their lives. On your birthday, you can take some time to reward yourself for the progress you have made. I recommend that everyone also write their own story.
