The origin of low self-esteem is unclear. It’s hard to know whether children are born with a natural feeling of self-worth and then sometimes lose it, or whether some children are born without it and never get a chance to develop it. Either way, low self-esteem is a painful disorder. It can be seen as both a mental and a spiritual wound.
Even if children are born with a natural reservoir of self-esteem, they need to be validated by the people around them if they are to build on that sense of self-worth. Love and attention are the most important forms of validation. Unfortunately, children don’t always get enough love and attention.
