Pastor said today that the singing portion of the service is more important than the sermon--as much as it pains him to admit it.
He said, the most-often repeated commandments in the bible in order are:
1) Do Not Fear
2) Pray
3) Sing (and it often related to the Holy Spirit)
He said singing is THE way to relieve the spirit of things like despair, hopelessness, confusion...Choir gave examples of songs that target these things--even songs about When God doesn't answer.
I knew it was true when I heard this sermon because that was one of things I changed last week. I put songs in the car (that aren't about romantic love to the tune of 90%) and songs that I am able to sing to.
SOME EXAMPLES:
FEELING---------------------------SONG TO SING IN RESPONSE
Despair, especially about POA----- Selah by Lauren Hill
Feeling Future-less----- Beautiful by India Arie
Low Self-Esteem-------Wonder by Natalie Merchant
Life Seems Purposeless -- Golden by Jill Scott
--No Such Thing by John Mayer
Thankless --Thankful by Jonny Lang (w Michael McDonald)
Sadness -- Amazing Grace by Boys to Men (amazing version)
God Doesn't Answer--- Never Alone by Barlow Girl (more than one version but this is fine)
Unloved--Crystal by Stevie Nicks (a love song but somehow makes me feel better instead of lonely)
I have more Christian music too but I haven't arranged it so that I can sing it when I'm feeling down in a specific way.
I hope someone else can use this idea...some of the songs are secular---if you can' t tell by the artists
