Just recently, the following was posted on msnbc.com. I find this fascinating and, ironically, hopeful. Addiction is as serious as any physical disorder that must be managed for a lifetime (i.e., diabetes). Knowing this give me added information and knowledge. And, for me, knowledge is power. www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44147493/ns/health-addictions/t/addiction-now-defined-brain-disorder-not-behavior-issue/#.TkwW2mExF4V"The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) just released this new definition of addiction after a four-year process involving more than 80 experts. Addiction is a chronic brain disorder and not simply a behavior problem involving alcohol, drugs, gambling or sex, experts contend in a new definition of addiction, one that is not solely related to problematic substance abuse."

I love that clip Healing! It's the most positive slant I've ever heard about addiction, and it makes me feel so good about being in recovery. Thanks so much for posting it. Short but so sweet.
Havefaith that article is also an interesting re-evaluation of addiction. Helpful to see that the unhealthy choices an addict makes are not so much conscious choices but symptoms of the brain disorder. Healings clip is like the antidote to any angst that I might feel about having a brain disorder!

Jac, You can find the whole video on you tube. I cant recommend it enough. I have been interning for college at a substance abuse addiction rehab place twice a week for the last 4 months. I have heard this talk over and over but Finally watching this video I 'Got It'.
It begins as a choice, a high, a comfort. But then over repetition and with hereditary factors, it becomes an addiction. The Craving is the disease part because the ability to stop the craving has been highjacked by the dopamine rush from the addiction. The brain has re wired to want that feeling"love, sex, attention, intrigue" in that way. The craving isnt a choice you can just stop if its an addiction. You have to stop and withdrawl and try to form new ways to be happy. But the cravin "hit" is a pathway that will always be there.
I met a guy, well, friend I may be interested in. Bam! I was rght back stuck in desire right away. Thats the craving part that is a part of my brain, my addiction. It was triggered.
So the tools are to calm the brain. Try to respond over react. And try to get the frontal lobe of choice making involved. Goal setting and mindful breathing.
I feel like I am just beginning this recovery again. HK

Such good info Healing. Hey if you get a chance can you post the link to the full version? I will also have a look for it. I need to get a firm grip on the frontal lobe ignition process! I am going to be meeting up with a guy soon too that I met online. My plan is to keep it very light (my light is probably someone else's mediumly heavy though, so it has to be like a feather light). I need a plan for if I get really mentally turned on by them in place beforehand this time. I might try a process of slapping myself. Just kidding. What kind of goals have you been setting?

I cant find the full video. Here are some clips.
Focusing on your breath will calm your mid( primal urge) brain and let the Frontal lobe think clearly. , Imagine one of those clear balls filled with glitter,(thats our mind)When we are stressed (shake the ball) the glitter clouds the inside of the ball, If we breathe and focus the glitter settles and the ball is clear.
Practice, Practice, Practice!
